Final Expense · Plain-English Guide
Burial insurance with no medical exam
If the idea of a nurse visit, bloodwork, or being turned down has kept you from getting coverage, here’s the good news: that’s not how final expense insurance works. Here’s the plain breakdown.
Two kinds of no-exam coverage
1. Simplified-issue (a few health questions)
- No exam, no bloodwork — just a short list of yes/no health questions.
- If you can answer them acceptably, you usually get lower rates and full coverage from day one (no waiting period).
- Common conditions like controlled diabetes, high blood pressure, or being a smoker are accepted by many carriers.
2. Guaranteed-issue (no health questions at all)
- No questions, no exam — you cannot be turned down within the eligible age range.
- Costs more, and includes a waiting period (usually two years) on natural-cause death, during which the policy pays back your premiums plus interest rather than the full benefit. Accidental death is typically covered in full from day one.
- It’s the fallback for serious health conditions — everyone qualifies.
Most people qualify for simplified-issue
Here’s the part that surprises people: you usually don’t need guaranteed-issue. The majority of applicants — even with common, managed conditions — qualify for a simplified-issue plan with better pricing and immediate coverage. The trick is matching you to the carrier that treats your health most favorably, because they all score the same conditions differently.
What to watch for
- Waiting periods. Make sure you know whether your plan has one before you buy — a good agent tells you up front.
- Don’t default to guaranteed-issue if you can qualify for simplified-issue — you’d pay more for a waiting period you may not need.
- Compare carriers. The same person can get very different rates and decisions across carriers.
Common questions
Will I be turned down for my health?
With simplified-issue, some conditions can lead to a decline at one carrier — but another often accepts you. And guaranteed-issue accepts everyone in the eligible age range with no health questions, so there’s almost always an option.
Is there a waiting period?
Simplified-issue plans for healthier applicants often have none. Guaranteed-issue plans usually have a two-year waiting period on natural-cause death (accidental death covered from day one). I’ll always tell you which you’re getting.
How much coverage should I get?
Most people choose $10,000–$15,000. See how much final expense insurance do you need?
